Africa All Star Music Fest ft. Mi Casa, Stonebwoy, Skales & Sauti Sol // Event Cover
Kpopsy Entertainment brought a few of Africa’s finest! South Africa’s Mi Casa, Ghana’s Stonebwoy, Nigeria’s Skales, and Kenya’s Sauti Sol! Here’s my cover!
Stepping into Rebel on July 14th, I was shocked. I got there just 20 minutes after it was billed to start, yet a modest crowd was already vibing out inside; African Time be damned! I went alone and felt quite at home singing along to key tracks from my childhood’s soundtrack, and as the the two step took over I was grateful for my flats, because dancing was definitely in my future. I noticed faces in the red-tinted crowd around me were gradually increasing, and as we listened to a healthy mix of R & B, South African house, trap, Nigerian dancehall and more of the like, I felt comfort in the parts of me usually neglected by the typical Toronto party.
A mixed group, in age and party size, I noticed how much closer we got as MC Bonde’s voice came over the speakers. Energetic performances and the hosts’ charisma made the wait for the main event much more comfortable, and the crowd’s energy was good; phone lights sprinkled the room, but not at the expense of the experience. We enjoyed the talents of Ghanaian up and comer, Slim Flexx, whose music worked well with a live band. A personal favourite was a bass-heavy, lilting track about love that almost made you want to relate.
As the first show of its kind, the effort put into it’s execution was clear and the result was well worth their time. Despite the difficulties of last minute changes, the Kpopsy team still held a successful festival that is sure to contribute to a sense of community for the GTA’s African population!
