Afrofest 2018! The Kscope On The Street

Afrofest Toronto is the Largest African music festival in all of North America and it is hosted by Music Africa. This festival celebrates African music, arts and crafts, fabrics, food, entertainers and Afro-preneurs.
Afrofest is typically celebrated over a two-day weekend in July at Woodbine park. This year’s event was held on July 7 & 8 and was coincidentally a celebration of its 30th anniversary.
The event is a family friendly event which means that there is something for every member of the family. There was face painting in the children’s corner, a drum circle, two stages with performances from both international and local acts. International acts like Ghetto Kids from Uganda, Lady Ponce from Cameroon and Dice Ailes from Nigeria were all present. Other performances were from Toronto acts like ADL dancers, ASAA Queens and an entire Congolese entourage. The event of course did not go down without a highly contested dance competition. All the performances were brought to life by the Djs and Mc’s present like MC Bonde and MC Aj Stylez.
My favourite part of the event was definitely the food. You cannot go to Afrofest and not get yourself some authentic African food. I got me some sumptuous Jollof rice with chicken and plantain from Lagos Lounge and juicy Puff- puff from Asun Depot.
After eating, I visited some of the vendors present and found a lot of beautiful African clothings and accessories. I purchased a beautiful  necklace and pendant shaped in the form of Africa and also purchased an Ankara fan which was definitely needed throughout the super hot weekend.
This year makes it my fourth year coming to Afrofest and I must say that it continues to be bigger and better every year. I am constantly blown away by all the acts and the entertainment they bring with their talent. It was yet again a beautiful experience for me as I got to interview guests of both African and Caribbean descent who were first timers at the event
I look forward to coming back again next year to cover the event and meet more beautiful people! For more information on next year’s event, follow @afrofest_toronto!
